Warner Bros is looking to bring some additional girl power to their 2017 solo Wonder Woman movie as the look at several female directors to helm the project. It’s no secret that superhero movies are huge right now, but not only is there a lack in the number of female heroes on the big screen, there’s an even bigger lack of females behind the camera. In fact, of the hundreds of comic book movies produced through the decades, only two have been directed by women - 1995’s Tank Girl from Rachel Talalay and 2008’s Punisher: War Zone directed by Lexi Alexander. Monster director Patty Jenkins at one point was set to direct Marvel’s Thor sequel, but was fired from the project and replaced by Game of Throne’s director Alan Taylor. Well, it looks like Warner Bros is looking to lessen the gap and according to Forbes, are eyeing several female directors for the job of bringing Wonder Woman to the big screen. The top contender on the list is Kathryn Bigelow, director of films like Point Break, Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker – the latter for which she won the Academy Award for Best Director – the only female to ever win so far. With her background in action, Bigelow seems like the perfect choice, but it’s unlikely she will take the job given her track record of working on more fact based films. More likely candidates are Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke and Deep Impact helmer Mimi Leder. Hardwicke has a relationship with the studio already having directed 2011’s Red Riding Hood and has some experience in the comic book universe having worked as the Production Designer on Tank Girl. Leder too has experience in the comic world and with DC specifically having directed an episode of the television series Human Target. Another contender is Karyn Kusama, who has a lot of experience working on female-lead films having directed 2000’s Girlfight as well as the sci-fi/action film Aeon Flux starring Charlize Theron and the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body with Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. The Tempest and Across the Universe director Julie Taymor is also on the list, but is considered more of a wildcard pick. We’ll have to wait and see which, if any, of these directors land the coveted gig, but production on Wonder Woman is expected to begin late next year or early 2016 for a planned June 23rd, 2017 release. In the meantime, we’ll get our first look at Gal Gadot as the Amazonian Warrior Princess when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives in theaters on March 25th, 2016. The first trailer is rumored to be arriving sometime in the next couple months, possibly along with the final Hobbit movie, which opens on December 17th. But first, which director do you think would be the best choice to direct the solo Wonder Woman movie? Share your thoughts below in the comments or tweet us @ClevverMovies.
