Do men have to lose out for women to get equality?

The Patriarchy has become a powerful feminist watchword for the unequal division of power between men and women. In some fields, though, the tables have turned, with women a third more likely to go to university, three quarters of teachers being women, and the courts predominantly giving women custody of children. Should we be demanding equality for men in these areas? Or are the arenas where equality is a mistaken goal and women should have the upper hand? Author and Associate Editor of Spiked, Joanna Williams argues that feminism is too middle class today and that gender wars help no one to gain equality.

Joanna Williams: Dr Joanna Williams is Head of Education and Culture at Policy Exchange. She is an author, commentator and the associate editor of Spiked. Her latest book Women vs Feminism: Why We All Need Liberating from the Gender Wars argues that today’s feminism is obsessed with trivial issues – skinny models, badly phrased jokes and misplaced compliments – and focuses on the regulation of male behaviour, rather than female empowerment, pitching men and women against each other in a never-ending gender war that benefits no-one.
