Femoral Nerve Anatomy : Origin, Course, Sensory and Motor innervation, Femoral nerve injury
The Femoral Nerve is a significant sensorimotor nerve, hailed as the largest branch emanating from the Lumbar Plexus, specifically rooted in the dorsal branches of spinal nerves L2 to L4. In its course, the nerve traverses alongside the lateral border of the Psoas Major muscle, slipping beneath the iliac fascia near the iliac crest, then passing deep to the inguinal ligament to make its descent into the thigh. Within the confines of the femoral triangle, it takes its place lateral to the femoral artery, asserting its presence. This nerve extends its motor innervation to muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh, namely the Iliacus and Pectineus, while also dispensing sensory fibers through branches such as the Intermediate Cutaneous Nerve of the thigh, which innervates the skin over the anterior thigh, and the Medial Cutaneous Nerve of the thigh, catering to the skin over the lower two-thirds of the thigh's medial surface. Additionally, an articular branch bequeaths sensation to the knee joint, and the extension as the Saphenous Nerve continues to supply the medial aspect of the knee, leg, and foot. Understanding the intricacies of the femoral nerveโs pathway is essential for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving the lower limb.
