Phil Fish's Fez is a brilliant and innovative platform puzzler. You play Gomez, a 2D pixel fellow whose world is turned inside out (or 3 dimensional) following a catastrophe. He leaves the confines of his little village, and embarks on a quest to find 32 cubes across multiple little interconnected stages with different themes. The stages themselves are beaten by shifting the landscape around and changing how they are perceived - it's best to imagine that they are cubes, and each face may present a route forward for Gomez to reach the next stage or collect cube parts by jumping, climbing or interacting with throwables and levers. The thing that most surprised me most is how vast and full of stages that Fez has - it is massive, and therefore easy to stray further out into the unknown with difficulty getting back to where you may need to backtrack to. It's truly intimidating, especially for a completionist. That's not to say that it isn't fun, it's just super easy to get side-tracked!

The puzzles are extremely well thought out and varied - turning the screen based on a rhythms, stacking boxes in the correct way, cracking codes from an ancient language or Tetris pieces and even scanning QR codes! I admit I had to refer to a guide for solutions a few times. The best part about Fez is the aesthetic and how the game looks. It's a salute to the NES or SNES games of yesteryear with it's retro pixel art, that's not dissimilar to Cave Story. The themes of the areas range from Ghouls & Ghosts-like Graveyards to serene waterfalls or black and green Game Boy styles and it's an absolute pleasure to stumble upon and gaze at every part of this game.
