And finally we reach the point we face Illua for the first time. Many players have trouble with her in their normal playthroughs... So, was it hard? Well, it was supposed to be, but I think I was both lucky and well-prepared knowing the limitations under which I was playing.
One thing you'll notice is that Luso hits like a kid. I used him as a Soldier for most of the challenge so that he would get the highest possible strength by the end of the game (I did no resetting for better stats whatsoever). Fighters and Parivirs have better strength growth but they're not available to us in this challenge. There is also the Hunter job, but we never get a greatbow. But if you remember that Soldiers don't get any good swords, and the best Soldier weapon I gave to Adelle... You can guess how good Luso can be with that weapon that teaches First Aid at this point in the game. He'd be a good support Blue Mage (and he is actually), but Adelle is better at that too.
Everybody on the field is certainly dangerous... Ewen hits twice with Double Sword, and can probably instakill if he gets somebody from behind. The Spellblade is both a solid attacker and has nasty debuffs. The Elementalist can also equip some unpleasant effects. The Seer knows Esuna, which makes Bad Breath, Screech and Sandstorm abuse on our side less effective than it would have otherwise been, and the -ara spells, which the chap won't ever use if we keep him busy by forcing to cast Esuna. Finally, the Illusionist deals very good damage to our entire party with his illusion magick, but needs to wait until enough MP is available.
Let's not forget Illua herself. Dimensional Rift is the most feared attack of her, dealing 75% HP damage to targets in a range that, I believe, is equal to Summons... Her physicals are guaranteed hits that may inflict Stop, and Saber increases her Attack and Accuracy. Now that I've beaten the whole challenge, I'm familiar with Saber all too well.
The best idea is to cast all the buffs while the party is standing together (Protect/Shell + Attack /\ ), and blind/confuse/hurt all the enemies who come near. Hopefully, Illua will not use Dimensional Rift at this point, because that will be 75% HP off everyone, making our further chances to win very tiny.
I have just the right luck with statuses, AI decisions and so on here.
Illua has Reflex... So all you people considering or already doing a challenge in this game better thing about something to counter that, if the Attack command is your only source of dealing damage.
