FFVII - L1NACNLBNC Challenge, Part 19: Demons Gate
This is it. The big one. I had many options here. I could have done it without leveling up HP Plus Materias, but then I would have had to use Right Arms to prevent it from being a ridiculous luck fest, and that battle wouldn't have been very interesting. So, I decided to go for this strategy instead. It's pretty similar to the LLNMIENA strategy, but I obviously have much less HP now. However, I do have Adaman Bangles to reduce damage and I can make two characters take no damage from Cave-In.
Rock Drop will kill you unless you have Barrier, and a critical or double drop will kill you unless you have Barrier and Defend. There's rarely a time to defend in this battle, so if that happens, you just have to deal with it the best way you can. Cave-In will only deal damage to Red, and only half damage thanks to the Dragon Armlet. Demon Rush will hit the entire party and you're in trouble if he decides to critical anyone. At least you have time to prepare for it, as he will always use it when his HP falls below 7500, 5000 and 2500. Whenever I see one of these numbers coming up, I take advantage of it by attacking him full force so that I don't have to heal and see another attack. As for dealing damage, I decided Molotovs were the best choice. I also had an S-mine from the Attack Squad battles that came in really handy.
This is not a very luck reliant battle, but there are still several things that can go wrong. First of all, you need to make sure Barrier doesn't run out at an inconvenient time. The worst time for it to run out is just before Demon Rush. There's also the previously mentioned critical and double rock drops, but you can't really do anything about that. It's not the end of the battle if someone does get killed, but once that happens, the chance of getting screwed increases dramatically. Cloud and Aeristh are wearing Peace Rings, so they will not lose Sadness if they do.
That's pretty much all there is to say. A good and tough battle that is not too luck reliant. The only luck reliant part is that you need to avoid bad luck. It got a bit intense in the end, though.
If you're wondering how I leveled up the materia, I did it by fighting about 70 groups of four Head Hunters. These are dangerous enemies that need to be taken care of as quickly as possible, so I had to steal one Dragon Scale for every battle. Needless to say, this took a while, but at least I won't have to worry about money any more in this challenge.
