Fico in Moscow: EU Still Unsure If I’m ‘On the Right Side of History’ | APT
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, speaking from Moscow, hit back at EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who questioned whether leaders who attend events alongside Vladimir Putin are "on the right side of history." In a pointed rebuke, Fico asserted Slovakia’s sovereign diplomatic stance and announced key steps to deepen ties with China, including investment cooperation, simplified visa regimes, and cultural exchange.
During his visit, Fico revealed serious discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the ongoing global trade war and the current state of EU-China relations. He extended a formal invitation for President Xi to visit Slovakia and pledged to open a Slovak Cultural Institute in Beijing by 2025.
The Slovak PM also hinted at an upcoming late-night meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite growing pressure from Western allies to distance themselves from Moscow.
Fico’s trip underscores Bratislava’s pivot toward a more independent foreign policy, defying EU criticism and aligning with strategic partners in Asia.
