Here you will find an introduction, review and some first impressions and insights for the video game Fields of Glory II. This strategy game was developed by Byzantine Games and published by Slitherine Software in 2017.
Fields of Glory II like all video games of the series is based on the 2008 miniature wargame "Field of Glory" for creating ancient and medieval tabletop battles.
The game is set during the Rise of Rome from around 280 BC to 25 BC and features turn-based tactical combat. The battles feature historically accurate units of different epochs and cultures. The player commands a huge variety of armies of different units ranging from infantry or artillery to elephants and chariots. He/She needs to employ many different tactical doctrines to be successful in set-piece historical battles. Essentially this game is a battle simulator using the means of a tabletop game. The campaign consists of a number of independent scenarios, there is no narrative. The units are however well researched and their design seems to be historically very accurate.
In this video I will introduce the game and play a first battle. I will demonstrate how it works on a non-expert level and point out the good and the bad based on my personal knowledge and gaming experience. I will also demonstrate that in war victory can be snatched away at the last moment, especially if you think that as a Germanic tribesman it is wise to fight naked against people in scale mail...
