In this video we will take a look at the PC game "Star Traders: Frontiers". It was designed, developed and published by Trese Brothers in 2018.
Star Traders: Frontiers is a tactical role-playing game set in an open science fiction world where humanity has colonized space. Humanity has formed different factions and some humans like the Zendu have evolved abilities like being able to pass on their memories to their descendants.
The game builds on the world created with the game "Templars Battleforce" and develops it further. You can find my Let's Play, playthrough and walkthrough of Templars Battleforce here (first episode, check also the playlist): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRRnz20klpQ
Star Traders: Frontiers is a hybrid game that combines trade, exploration, shipfighting and crew battles. Players play as a starship captain and can align with one or more factions or even become pirates. They need to manage their ship and their crew (all functions can be automated), get new and bigger ships and accomplish a multitude of missions like trading, delivery and taxi missions, diplomatic missions, salvage operations, mercenary work like bounty hunting, patrolling, blockading, spying or even hunting the dreaded xeno.
There are many story lines to follow and individual NPCs to support or hamper. These NPCs, that form more or less important contacts for the players, can (and will at some point due to old age) die. The game and the regular missions are procedurally generated. This provides an unlimited number of job opportunities for the player.
For the customization of the crew characters there are 38 classes available Captain and senior officers may chose up to three of these job classes. All (or rather most) classes bring talents for space travel, for planet landing (called landfall), interaction with NPCs, crew and ship fights. In addition the captain, officers and a selected number of crew can be individually equipped with armour, weapons and other items. All characters can also be visually individualized.
The game features a 2D layout of the galaxy. Ship and crew fights are also 2D and seen from the side in turn-based combat. Ship combat features shooting and boarding actions. Crew combat features shoot outs and melee.
All in all this game, despite rather basic graphics and only limited, sometimes ridiculous sounds, features many intriguing ideas. The world building is especially nice and immersive. There are aspects to be found even AAA-titles could look on as an inspiration. I personally liked very much that they continued other arcs of the world started with Templars Battleforce.
I can rate Star Traders: Frontiers as 79/100, which makes it a solid and good game that you as a serious player or a person who is interested in digital interactive media certainly might want to know. I personally look forward to the future projects of Trese Brothers and see lots of potential there for future games.
In this video I will introduce the game. I will create a captain, give tipps and advice and play a few first missions and combats. I will demonstrate how it works and point out the good and the bad. In the last section of the video I will demonstrate the late game and show my ship and crew, so beware, there are SPOILERS (you'll get a warning in the video).
