Fighting Regiments of War of Rights - 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry “Bucktails”
129The 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry, also known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment, 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, Kane’s Rifles, or simply as the Bucktails was a volunteer infantry regiment that was mustered at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on June 21, 1861. Originally known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, the unit was a part of the famed Pennsylvania Reserves. The regiment was mostly made up of woodsmen and lumbermen from Western Pennsylvania who could sustain themselves in the woods. "The regiment was mostly made up of woodsmen and lumbermen from Western Pennsylvania who donned their hats with deer tails which caught on quickly with the rest of the men, giving the regiment their iconic nickname of "the Bucktails"Thomas Kane, the first colonel of the bucktails, taught his men to fight as skirmishers and use whatever cover they could find. He stressed individual responsibility in his men, a contradiction to the military manuals, that favored a group mentally.
