The 52nd New York Infantry was an all german regiment recruited formed New York City in the fall of 1861. Colonels Emil Von Schoening and Paul Frank were given authority to raise infantry regiments to quell the southern rebellion. Colonel Schoening was able to raise six companies and he called his battalion the German Rangers and Colonel Paul Frank was able to raise four companies and he called his battalion the Sigel Rifles after the famous German-American General Franz Sigel. The two battalions would merge and form the 52nd New York on November 1st, 1861 for three years of service, keeping both bynames for the regiment.

The 52nd would be baptized in fire at the battle of Seven Pines and would continue to see service with McClellan during the Peninsula Campaign and Seven Days battle. After their failed effort to take Richmond, the Germans and the II corps would be stationed in Washington D.C. and would cover Pope’s retreat after his failed push towards Richmond during the Northern Virginia Campaign. Upon hearing Lee crossed into Maryland, their corps would join McClellan in his pursuit of the old gray fox.

Currently you can find the 52nd New York Infantry on Cooke's Countercharge and Otto and Sherrick Farm
