History in Pi Minutes is a series where I look at some popular topics in Disney or Theme Park History and cover them in a bite size format.
This is a compilation of the four History in Pi Minutes videos I made for #FigmentFebruary in 2021.
When EPCOT Center opened in 1982 at Walt Disney World, the Imagination Pavilion became a n instant hit! It perfectly captured the inspirational and aspirational tone of classic epcot while also fully capturing the whimsical and magical feeling of classic Disney rides! But this attraction only exists because of a series of projects from famed imagineer Tony Baxter fell apart. Professor Marvel from Discovery Bay plus his original balloon ride from the first pitch of the Land Pavilion were both unbuilt attractions and from those roots Journey into Imagination grew! A true passion project by a legendary creative mind.
When EPCOT Center opened in 1982 at Walt Disney World, the Imagination Pavilion became an instant hit! It perfectly captured the inspirational and aspirational tone of classic epcot while also fully capturing the whimsical and magical feeling of classic Disney rides! But that wasn't "hip" and "trendy" enough so it was gutted and changed completely! But due to issues with sponsors and budgets it was a terrible mess that pleased no one and actively insulted guests to their faces.
Next we are gonna look at the current version of the Figment ride and look at how even with budget cuts it has managed to be charming and fun. Although it isn't able to live up to the iconic original it is a great improvement over the second edition. Although who knows what the future holds for Figment and the Imagination Pavilion at Epcot as refreshes are on their way and Disney StudioLab teases redesigns.
Finally, we are gonna look at Language Arts through Imagination. An Educational cartoon show (well, partially animated) starring Figment the Dragon! These videos were a part of the EPCOT Center Educational Media series and were only available to schools. For decades, the show was considered Lost Media as so many of the episodes were impossible to find. Only Would you Eat a Blue Potato could be found, originally by the fan site Figment's Imagination. Although recently the rest of the series has been found! Including crossover episodes with Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan! I hope you enjoy this look at this utterly bizzare weird and terrible animated atrocity.
