History in Pi Minutes is a series where I look at some popular topics in Disney or Theme Park History and cover them in a bite size format. In this episode, I'm testing out a new format with a top five list! Who doesn't love a list of top fun facts?
When Walt Disney was building Disneyland, he wanted to make sure his park would stay clean. So, he watched people to see how they handled their trash. From these observations, he came up with the 30 Step Rule. Inside a Disney Park you are never more than 30 steps away from a trash can!
Underneath the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World is a series of underground tunnels. The Utilidors. These are cast member only backstage space of course. But Disney's unique AVAC system for handling waste uses these tunnels too! Trash flies through pneumatic tubes in these tunnels at crazy fast speeds!
Disney Recycles. It recycles a lot. But if guests can't physically see the recycling happening, they don't believe it. So, even though Disney sorts through all the garbage to separate the trash from the recycling and therefore don't care which bin stuff gets thrown into, they still put out recycling bins to assure guests that they are green and saving the environment.
Some Trash Cans are alive. Push the Talking Trash Can has been in Disney Parks around the World and even ran to be the Mayor of Tomorrowland, Pipa the Talking Recycling Can used to hang out in Animal Kingdom. The Electric Umbrella in Epcot used to have a talking trash can with radical catch phrases!
Every land has its own unique Disney Trash Can Design. These are fantastic and fun! They even have extra special ones near the castle. ShopDisney sells trash can merchandise and collectibles featuring the unique designs. And there are fan blogs and videos dedicated to documenting the Magical Trash!
