Final Doom: Evilution. What's it like 28 years later? Map 28 - Heck
I was part of the team that designed this in 1994, as well as one half of the team that made the other part of Final Doom - The Plutonia Experiment. I decided to replay this again for nostalgic reasons. I wasn't prepared for what happened next. Almost immediately I didn't like it, and from there it got worse, much worse. I agonized over whether to publish these videos or not but eventually decided that the best therapy after this experience was to share my complaint ridden descent into madness. I fully understand these maps were built when Doom was in its infancy, but there's something interesting lurking beneath the bland, repetitive corridors of Evilution. How did it come to be so homogenous? How does a collection of talented Doom mappers from across the world come together, work hard, and end up producing something so ... vanilla? I examine these mysteries as I head deeper and deeper into the abyss that is TNT:Evilution. Ps. if you worked on Evilution you probably shouldn't watch these.
