Final Doom | The Plutonia Experiment | MAP10: Onslaught [UV+Pistol Start]
This map is way more harder from scratch that I remembered. I tried numerous different strategies here, first of which was the runaway strategy. I tried killing only the Chaingunners near the Blue key, after that I ignored everything else and headed straight for the sewer part. This strategy was too unreliable, because in most cases I was damaged by a Mancubus fireball before I got to the sewer entrance. Dodging those fireballs with Partial Invisibility was too difficult and unpredictable, which lead to me being almost dead by the time I reached the sewer area. Taking down those Hell Knights with just a Shotgun + Invisibility was very challenging.
After experimenting with different ideas, I came across a speedrun demo where an interesting exploit was utilized. This exploit allows you to get the Super Shotgun without ever entering the sewer area. To do this, you must strafe run inside the Yellow Door room via the window. This allowed me to devise a new plan to complete the map. Having the Super Shotgun this way, I was able to get rid of most of the enemies, which allowed me to collect some much needed extra ammo for the upcoming fights, without being distracted. Later, I utilized the Partial Invisibility, so I could make a relatively safe run to the sewer entrance without being destroyed by those Chaingunners.
The sewer area was now way easier, thanks to the "early" Super Shotgun. Still, I didn't feel too comfortable in there because of the active Partial Invisibilty and the lack of Armor. The last big challenge was to avoid being blasted by the Arch-Vile duo that spawns in once you hit the switch near the Plasma Rifle secret. Fortunately, I made my escape and managed to close the door behind me to avoid being hit by the Revenant group that just had spawned in.
Onslaught has been way more difficult for me than MAP15, but with these new (to me anyway) tricks, the difficulty came down quite a lot from what it was before. Despite having failed many times, it was very fun and being chased by so many threatening monsters in such narrow spaces gets you excited in some weird way. I love this map.
