Cloud and Tifa dig deeper into their memories of the incident at the Nibelheim reactor five years ago. The truth is Cloud never did join SOLDIER, but instead was a marine in the Shinra army. Cloud accompanied both Sephiroth and his friend Zach, who was SOLDIER 1st class, to Nibelheim.
After Sephiroth lost his mind Zach pursued him to the reactor but was defeated. Cloud, keeping his promise to Tifa to be there when she needed it the most, took up Zach's Buster Sword and stabbed Sephiroth in the back wounding him considerably but not killing him.
Cloud then pursued Sephiroth to the reactor core where Sephiroth seemingly impaled him with his Masamune, however he missed and Cloud was able to throw Sephiroth to his death.
