The Ancient Forest is an annoying puzzle area with some pretty good items, depending on when you go there. You can access the Ancient Forest after you acquire a gold chocobo (can be done after getting the highwind) or in disc 3 after killing Ultima Weapon. The earlier you go the more use you will get out of the items, but most people don't get a gold chocobo till late in the game. It's up to you.
