This is video #40 in my playthrough of Final Fantasy II on the Nintendo GameBoy Advance. This game is part of the Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls compilation.

We are currently in the Soul of Rebirth postgame content. Previously, the party continued raiding treasures in the Unknown Palace and backtracked to Machanon to restock. Now, it is time to explore the rest of this place and take on the final boss of the postgame.

On floor 4F, the party takes the second door from the west (time 0:34). This is the last door they have to take. It takes them to floor 6F.

To the north, a chest contains the Bracers (time 2:42). They are guarded by a monster-in-a-box encounter with Beelzebub Soul. Great, the giant bee is back. Look out for its high-level magic. The Bracers are an accessory for Josef.

In the southeast, the party takes the teleporter to the raised part of floor 4F (time 7:20).

In the northwest of 4F, they take the next teleporter to floor 7F (time 8:56).

East and then north from the teleporter, they find a chest containing the Genji Helm (time 9:03).

Around to the southeast, the party takes the teleporter to floor 8F (time 12:20).

In the southwest of 8F, a chest contains the Aegis Shield (time 13:11). Might not be bad for Minwu.

In the northeast, a chest contains the Genji Armor (time 15:07).

In the northwest, the party takes the teleporter to floor 9F (time 16:59). Almost there!

In the southeast, they take the last teleporter to floor 10F (time 17:37). They have reached the top floor of the palace.

In the north, the party finds ... the Emperor (time 18:41)! The Emperor explains that when he died, his light and dark halves split. His dark half went to Hell and became master of Pandaemonium. This is the Emperor's light half. The Unknown Palace is not Pandaemonium but Arubboth, palace of the heavens. The Unknown Cave was not Jade Passage but Raqia, the realm of fallen angels. The Emperor came here and became master of Arubboth. He is the one who brought Minwu, Scott, Josef, and Ricard here. He asks for their forgiveness. In return, they can live here for eternity. However, the party's loved ones appear and tell them not to be fooled. Firion's party is continuing the struggle against the Emperor's dark half. There is not even a choice, as there was in Dragon Quest. Minwu and company refuse to forgive the Emperor's light half. For that, the Emperor threatens to give them eternal suffering.

After the long scene, it is time to fight the Emperor (time 25:17). The Emperor has powerful magic attacks, such as Starfall and Flare. Minwu's Wall should help mitigate them. Flare, Holy, and Ultima are good offensive spells to use against him.

More scenes take place after the Emperor's defeat (time 34:13). After the Emperor's light half dies, we cut to Firion and company just after they have defeated the Emperor's dark half. Bye bye, Emperor.

Then, we join Firion's party in the throne room of Castle Fynn (time 35:09). The same ending scene plays out, but now Kain and his mother are here, and Minwu's party shows up to bear witness. Nice way to wrap things up. After Firion and company leave, Minwu's group has some final words before they vanish.

An epilogue plays (time 40:52). Afterwards, the credits roll (time 41:57).

I don't think Final Fantasy II is as awful as some think, but it isn't the best, either. The dungeon design can be pretty sadistic, as far as empty rooms with guaranteed encounters. The character progression system is very different. I don't feel that it is implemented especially well in this game, but it has been adapted to other games, like Final Fantasy XI and Skyrim. Most of the music is pretty good, especially the Pandaemonium theme. The start of the postgame is particularly rough, especially if you haven't powerleveled Minwu or Josef. One nice thing is that Kain and Mysidia are reused in Final Fantasy IV.

After the credits, you have the opportunity to make another clear save (time 45:05).

Thanks for watching!

This video is part of my Final Fantasy II playthrough. I am playing the version of the game released in the Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls compilation for the Nintendo GameBoy Advance in 2004. All characters, story, music, artwork, and other components of this game are the property of their respective owners.

Played and recorded in BizHawk version 2.2.2. Produced with Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.
