Final Fantasy IV Advance - Part 23: Yang, Edward, & Rydia's Trial
Time to enter the Lunar Ruins.
Conveniently Rosa & Rydia feature in the first five trials, so I can make a party of five that will handle everything well.
I don't think I'll explain the standard floors, but I'll talk through the trials, and anything worth mentioning. You'll notice I use Break A LOT. It's cheap high accuracy KOs on the bulk of the enemies you'll find here.
First up there's Yang's trial. I think this is probably the most boring trial. It's literally just fighting monks, and palette swaps of them.
Edward does decent damage now, and Rydia's Bahamut will help a lot. The rest can attack as standard with Rosa using Curaja. his will easily get you through all of the fights before the Lunar Boss.
Be aware of your MP though, Drillmasters will take a couple of casts. For Lunar Titan cast float to avoid Earthquake and take time setting up with Protect if you want.
When he gets low on HP he starts using Crush which is pretty much guaranteed to be an insta kill on one character.
As he only seemed to do it at low HP, it's not too much of a problem. You can either attack all out at this point or just use Rydia to Bahamut whilst everyone else heals.
Every one of these trials does seem to have a theme, or plays on what is considered a weakness of the character. I'd say the theme of this is discipline, as a monk needs discipline, and to win the consecutive battles you need it too.
Next up is Edward's Trial. It is an easy trial, and like Yang's a bit repetitive, but at least you get to explore Damcyan Castle a bit.
Your job is to put spirits to rest. Kill them once and then have Edward attack them to put them to rest. Simple.
When you're in the basement make sure you look all around before heading for Shiva. One thing to do against Lunar Shiva. Take Edward's Red equipment off, it resists Fire, making him weaker to Ice at the same time. I didn't do this, but Edward wasn't that important anyway.
Shiva does more damage the higher her HP is and will heal herself periodically with Ice type spells. It's worth using Firaga in this fight, cheaper, quicker 9999 damage.
She'll get easier as the fight progresses, so if you've got off 2-3 Firagas you'll win as long as you don't run out of MP/healing items.
After the fight Edward gets the chant ability from his item. It's worth starting a fight with this, and until he's over level 70, exclusively using this on him (unless you go up against something weak to Holy). Chant buffs the party with Shell & Protect. I think this trial plays on Edward's regret of not being able to save his people from the attacks by Golbez's Red Wings.
Finally there's Rydia's Trial. This one was almost too obvious. She gets stripped of the summons she obtains whilst in the land of summons. You have to fight the monsters she supposedly fought and get them back. You still have Bahamut and any optional summons you unlocked though. And all her Black Magic.
The fights are easier than their Lunar counterparts. They're about as strong as Zeromus in terms of HP, other than that they're very weak. Shiva use Firaga. Ifrit use Blizzaga. Titan use Float. Ramuh is Ramuh. Lunar Dragon is the boss.
Surprisingly, this boss can be reverted from Mist form to physical form with a physical attack. Odd. Its counter will only deal 1 damage to everybody as well, so that's nothing to fear. The status it inflicts can be an issue, but I found myself outhealing the status afflictions. Just Esuna any people asleep, the poison will be outhealed easily. Don't use Holy Elemental attacks, they will heal it. Bahamut can miss in this trial, so use Flare on Rydia for certainty, although it didn't miss too much for me.
The reward for this is a buffed up Mist Dragon summon. It now casts blink on the party as well as attacking. Great combination for the starting turn with Edward's Chant.
