Previously, the party explored floors B9-B11 of the Depths. They have hit the dungeon's final stretch. On B10, they battled Lunar Odin and acquired the Ragnarok. Now, the party will explore B12, gather the last treasures remaining in the Depths, and do some grinding to prepare for the final boss battle. The game's end is in sight!
Depths:
The party resumes in the northwest of floor B12 in the Depths. They backtrack upstairs to floor B11.
In the west of the northwestern section, the party opens the blue chest. It is guarded by another powerful monster-in-a-box: Lunar Leviathan. When water is gushing around Lunar Leviathan, it is preparing to devastate the party with Tidal Wave. Fortunately, there is an easy trick to this, too. Hitting Lunar Leviathan with a lightning-elemental attack will disperse the water and cancel Tidal Wave. If Edge in the party, he should equip the Boltslicer, and berserking him won't hurt. Rydia or Palom should nuke with Thundaga. The enemy can counter with Glare on a random party member, so be careful. He can also reduce the party's HP to critical with Maelstrom.
The party soon shocks Lunar Leviathan into submission. They obtain the Hero's Shield. For accomplishing this feat, the player earns the Steam achievement "Bodacious Aegis".
The Hero's Shield is magnificent. It absorbs elements of other equipped armor. Kain equips it.
The party goes back down to floor B12. They now begin exploring this level. They now begin encountering Maenads. Treat these like miniboss battles. Maenads have powerful physical and magical attacks.
Edge reaches Level 61.
In the east of the northern section, a chest contains an Elixir.
Another blue chest is in the north of the southern section. For now, the party passes it up.
They take the southern stairway down to floor B13, the game's refuge before the final boss. There are an interdimensional elevator and a save point here. Very handy indeed! I would not have objected if they had chosen to add teleporters to the final dungeon in the 3D version of Final Fantasy IV.
After resting and saving, the party backtracks up to floor B12. They open the blue chest. This one is protected by the nastiest monster-in-a-box in this game: Lunar Bahamut.
Lunar Bahamut begins by preparing Megaflare, which can immolate the entire party. Fortunately, the party can establish Reflect to bounce it back at him. Haste is also a big help, especially on the Reflect casters. Afterwards, Lunar Bahamut can use powerful physical attacks and spells. Reflect should protect the party from the worst of the spells. Be ready to reestablish Reflect when Lunar Bahamut prepares for Megaflare again. The countdown will get shorter each time. The party can put Slow on Lunar Bahamut, but look out for him to buff himself with Haste, Protect, and Shell prior to future Megaflare countdowns. He can also use Black Hole to dispel the party's buffs.
Be sure someone has high health at the end of the fight. Lunar Bahamut will blast the party with Meteor when he is defeated.
In the end, the party outlasts Lunar Bahamut. They obtain the powerful Ultima Weapon. For accomplishing this feat, the player earns the Steam achievement "This Is a Knife". Ceodore equips this fine weapon.
The party backtracks down to floor B13. They rest and save at the save point.
Then, they use the interdimensional elevator to teleport to floor B1 of the Depths. They visit the shop and stock up on consumables. Then, they use the northern teleporter to return to the Subterrane.
Subterrane (time 30:46):
The party arrives on floor B12. They take the southern teleporter up to floor B11.
On floor B11, the party does some grinding. The enemies here are much easier than those in the Depths, but they still provide decent experience. Fortunately, the party is well geared for the Dark Sages now.
Ceodore reaches Level 60.
Kain reaches Level 59.
Rosa reaches Level 57.
Rydia reaches Level 61.
Edge reaches Level 62.
Ceodore reaches Level 61.
Rosa reaches Level 58.
Kain reaches Level 60.
The party heads back down to floor B12. They save at the save point.
Next time, the party will confront the final boss and complete the game.
Thanks for watching!
