I don't remember FF9 being heavily promoted at the time of release. I took a bus into town with the intention of picking up a new album or video and it was kind of just sat there on the shelf in Virgin Megastore, vastly different to the building anticipation for the release of 8 - probably because the PS2 was the big news by the time it reached the UK in 2001. Due to the seemingly understated release, I had no time to form any sort of expectations - but if I had, then they would have been smashed. And over two decades later, it still manages to hold up as one of the best series entries.

The story is centred around 8 well written characters, all trying to find their calling. They are brought together as the nations of the planet of Gaia sit on the verge of a world war that will be instigated by the Queen of Alexandria - however as the story unfolds, you find that the motives may not be entirely her own. It's engaging, and you won't want to see the back of these characters - it's almost sad when you get done with it.

New introductions include the trance system (this game's limit break) which unlocks unique abilities for each character whilst in battle, but doesn't trigger all that often. You also learn abilities from your weapons and armour, which encourage grinding - and seeing your progress as you go is encouragement enough to grind. Active Time Events are another fun new addition where you can check up on what your fellow party members are doing whilst you're off on your own - adding additional context to a certain situation. A great storytelling mechanic. Side content is almost endless too, ranging from the fun chocobo hot n cold treasure hunting to the disappointing Tetra Master, which is inferior in every way to Triple Triad.

I won't focus too much on sound, graphics and movies for this review - as it's a Squaresoft game then it goes without saying that it's a beautifully designed world, Uematsu's score is stunning and nobody did it better than Square in the golden age of FF.
