The 500 Greatest Video Games of All Time - Borderlands - Part 2
1One of the earliest examples of a "looter shooter", Borderlands clearly has had a lasting impact and influence on first person shooting games, Role playing games and videogames in general. You can pick one of four different characters, each with a unique ability and skill tree to support - your character is then introduced to the inhabitants of the planet Pandora, and tasked with getting into "the vault" (a cave of wonders which opens for a short window every 200 years) and seizing the treasure within. There are some colourful characters that help or hinder you on this hybrid of comedy, western and sci fi adventure - and they make it all the more fun as you take on missions to upgrade your gear, without which you would have no hope in finishing the tougher missions - set across several different maps. The art style is visually striking and distinctive with its characters and objects sporting textures resembling a pulp graphic novel.
With the first Borderlands game, these missions range from fun (boss fights and high octane shootouts) to repetitive and tedious (collect the thing, find 20 of such and such) - and if I'm honest, the humour, character arcs and world building had not yet reached their peaks - and it feels almost barren and empty in some parts. Having played it's far superior sequel first, my experience is vastly different to someone who would have played this at launch - and that's a real shame.

It should also be noted that I've been told that the best parts of Borderlands are within its DLC - but after I'd put down the base game's final boss, I was done and ready for something else. I also make no secret of the fact that I will take a single player game with a strong narrative over any co-op any day of the week - I guess I don't play well with others... so I'm also not going to enjoy the multiplayer experience that these games are famed for. But what may not be good for me, may be excellent to some.
