Current situation: On the way to Riovanes castle, Ramza encounters a group of Nanten deserters, who attempt to collect the capture or kill him to earn themselves an honorable discharge. Unable to defuse the situation, he's forced to fight. Afterward, Olan shows up, and shares that even though he's part of the Nanten knights, he sees Ramza as an ally. Ramza asks him to talk to Orlandu, Balbanes's old friend.

Further along the road, Ramza runs into a heated argument between Malak, the exotic wizard he met in Dorter, and his sister Rafa. The two were orphans raised by Barinten, the Grand Duke of Riovanes, and taught special combat skills. Rafa claims he's the reason their parents died, but Malak doesn't want to abandon his adoptive father. Malak is waiting in ambush for Ramza's arrival. Rafa runs to him for help when he arrives, hoping to escape from Malak. Ramza's group fights off the attackers and saves Rafa, while Malak escapes amid the battle. Afterward, he passes a message along to them, demanding that Rafa be brought along to Riovanes castle, threatening Alma's life if they refuse.

At Riovanes castle, Barinten is meeting with Vormav and Wiegraf, trying to form an alliance with the church. Barinten calls Malak, who brings a captured Izlude into the room, revealing that he and the two holy stone he had taken from Alma are in Barinten's possession. Angered, Vormav sends Wiegraf after Malak, and uses a Holy Stone of his own to transform into Lucavi form, killing Barinten and everyone else in the room.

At the gate of Riovanes castle, Malak leads as they again try to capture Ramza. He doesn't listen to Rafa's pleas for him to stop, trusting the duke to free him after the Germonik scriptures are recovered. Rafa and Malak both disappear somewhere during the fight, as Ramza and his group break through the gates. Alma, held in a cell in the castle hears sounds of fighting and dying. A wounded knight stumbles into her cell, speaking of a monster. She takes the opportunity to try to escape.

Inside the castle, Ramza encounters Wiegraf, who wants to duel him one-on-one. When it doesn't go his way, he uses the Holy Stone to transform into Velius, calling out demon friends to join the fight as Ramza's group catches up to him. They somehow manage to vanquish Velius, and rush to save Alma. Meanwhile, she's confronted with a horrific scene where Vormav had attacked. With his dying breath, Izlude gives Alma the Pisces Holy Stone, and tells her to give it to Ramza. Vormav enters the room again, and is about to kill Alma, but he notices a strange reaction between her and the Virgo stone, deciding to instead take her with him alive. The Pisces stone drops to the ground.

Ramza's group arrives at the roof of the castle to find Rafa confronting Barinten. Malak jumps in to try to stop the fight, taking a shot from Barinten that was meant for Rafa, and dying. Barinten orders Rafa to bring him the Holy Stone that Malak has on him, but before she can do anything, an inhuman assassin shows up and throws him from the rooftop. Marquis Elmdor appears, not dead as rumored, and tells Ramza to give him the stone, and that he'll tell Vormav to release Alma. When Ramza doesn't cooperate, he sets his two assassins on Rafa to take the stone by force. However, after some fighting, he decides to retreat, telling Ramza he'll be waiting at Limberry Castle.

As Rafa mourns her brother, the Holy Stone she's holding shows a reaction. Ramza warns her that it's dangerous, but the stone's power activates, bringing Malak back to life. After a reunion between the siblings, everyone searches the castle for Alma, discovering that she's no longer there. Figuring out that Vormav must have been the one who took her, Malak thinks he may have gone back to the main church in Murond. Picking up the Pisces stone from where Alma was taken, Ramza decides to head for Zeltennia to see if he can find Delita.
