Story recap: With the newly healed wind drake, the party flies to the sage Gill's island, but X-Death causes the island to sink before they can go into his cave. Without access to Gill, the party instead visits Surgate, the castle of king Zeza, the fourth Dawn warrior. They learn that Zeza is away, mounting an attack on X-Death's castle from the sea. They fly to Zeza's fleet to join him. Zeza's plan is to use the fleet of ships as a decoy while they dig a tunnel under the ocean to reach one of the barrier towers, and by taking down a tower, the barrier will be destroyed.

While they're resting on the ship, X-Death's troops attack, led by Gilgamesh. They fight him and his minions off, and in the process, Gilgamesh falls into the ocean. Once the chaos settles down, Zeza brings the party into a submarine stashed below the ship, piloting it to the tunnel they'd been digging under the ocean. He blasts through the final wall and into the barrier tower. Zeza sends the party to the top of the tower to smash the antenna, while he stops the power in the engine room down below. After fighting off a monster that tries to stop them, they destroy the antenna. The entire tower begins to collapse, trapping Zeza in the engine room. He insists that the others need to escape immediately, and over Galuf's protests, the other three wrestle him onto the wind drake and fly away from the tower. Galuf waits by the submarine for a long while, but Zeza never emerges.
