Final Fantasy VI: Forever Rachel improvisation - and an announcement
Hilariously my camera ran out of memory a minute before the end - but we still have the sound so that's okay.
Here's the announcement first: I want to do videos of this kind! I'm going to try to semi-regularly post improvisations based on themes which already exist. I WILL for this series take requests, more or less - everyone is welcome to suggest a tune (from pretty much anything) and I will choose a few to improvise something on. This will hopefully improve my improvising skills and give you guys some insight on how I waste my time when not actually practising or playing real pieces.
Anyway, regarding Forever Rachel: this piece - and actually the whole Final Fantasy VI soundtrack - has a lot of meaning to me. This game was probably the biggest factor in me deciding that I actually like music and playing the piano. I played it for the first time when I was 14 and it was quite the experience - suddenly my eyes (or ears) were opened to a whole new world.
The original version of this is quite heart-wrenching. That flute synth is really, really good. I find FF6's synth to be very effective in general actually.
This improvisation took some... surprising directions. Listening to it again, most of the decisions I took in the first half were actually quite effective, though there was definitely too much cadenza-esque stuff.
Then at 5:39 I decided to put some ZUN-esque harmonies in, going more and more in his style - the part at 6:50 to me sounds like it could have been lifted straight from Perfect Cherry Blossom's first stage. Then at 7:15 I just thought "screw it" and went to my favourite obnoxious ZUN rock, and I completely snap at 8:08 but very soon come back to a serious style.
At 8:40 I realize that I didn't use the Ab - D chord progression at the beginning even though it's used in the original version, so I hammer it a few times to compensate :D
