The greatest game of all time, if you were asking my opinion :) Has been since Christmas 1994 and probably always will be. Translation differences aside, the most obvious things you will notice is that female sprites are wearing less clothing. Goddess statue, Siren, and the woman in the painting are the ones I can think off the top of my head. 1994 was a weird time. They weren't even allowed to call Holy spells that - that's why they were named things like White or Pearl. And why "god" in ActRaiser had to be called The Master. Nintendo had real issues with religious references.

Recording quality gets substantially better at Death Gaze, due to me using HyperCam for the first half, and ZSNES's built-in recorder for the second half. The game does NOT have the lag present in the earlier videos, that's just HyperCam.

Please read the whole description for some interesting tidbits on the theory of Cefca and especially the Statue design. I STILL cannot believe this music is from a video game...from 1994...on a 16-bit console. Nobuo Uematsu is such a genius! "Dancing Mad", the track that plays during the final battle, has GOT to be the most ambitious and epic video game song in history.

Tier 1: Visage, Long Arm, Short Arm (Majin rematch)

(Visage's weakness to Fire attacks may further reinforce the possibility that he, like the other tiers of the final boss battle, was inspired by Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy. Specifically, Visage resembles Satan in appearance; in the ninth circle of hell, Satan was depicted as a demon entrapped up to the waist in ice, which may explain Visage's weakness.)

Tier 2: Tiger, Power, Machine, Magic (Megami rematch)

Tier 3: Lady, Rest (Kishin rematch) Steal some very interesting swords from these two ;)

The final battle with Kefka could be modeled after Dante Alighieri's 'The Divine Comedy.' As you may or may not know, in 'The Divine Comedy' Dante depicts himself exploring Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, in that order.

In Hell, the Devil is depicted as a great demon trapped in a frigid prison at the waist, not unlike the appearance of Visage. I don't know about the Long Arm and Short Arm, though I suspect they were just added to give the player some extra challenge.

Purgatory was depicted as a place where those who had no sins, yet did not believe, were left to suffer outside of God's light for all eternity. This suites the middle quartet of enemies nicely:

A) Power, someone who feels that he makes his own fate and is not guided by God, and thus is lost.

B) Tiger, for those animals which defied God's will by attacking his chosen people, humans, yet who do not have the sentience to understand their crime.

C) Magic, for those who refute God in favor of some other deity they believe to be responsible for their abilities (presumably the Three Goddesses in FFVI).

D) Machine, for those who found a 'God in the Machine,' and thus lost sight of the true God.

In Heaven, Dante meets famous saints. The third step of the mountain, Rest and Lady, could be a depiction of these saints. It has also been suggested that the two opponents were meant to be abominations of a Michaelangelo sculpture, "Pieta," which depicts Jesus laying at rest in Mary's lap after his crucifixion. If you get a chance to look at an image of the statue next to Lady and Rest, you'll find that there's a curious similarity between the two.

At the end of Dante's journey he meets God himself, who tells him the meaning of life. In this case, Kefka is God, and he informs us that life is meaningless.
