Final Fantasy VII - Part 3
0And here it is - in my opinion the greatest JRPG of all time in design, scope, gameplay, lastability and importance. For 26 years it has served as the benchmark for all similar games, and although you may argue that there have been better done games, can you really say that one has had the cultural impact that this masterpiece has?
The game holds up today, and at the time it was cutting edge - pushing the PS1 with its finely detailed illustrated backgrounds and unique character polygon models (which may look a little lego by today's standard, but the animations were suited to the game and could convey the strongest of emotions). Battles looked stunning also, with higher detailed models - and the materia/equipment customisation adding so many levels to how you could approach a fight. Music is something else to shout about, with Uematsu's infectious magnum opus perfectly suited to intense boss fights, sombre moments and the mood of Midgar's slums or the joy of the Gold Saucer.
The story itself is complex - and at times admittedly threatens to not make much sense - and revolves around 9 companions thrown together in a battle against antagonist Sephiroth (the child of an ancient being who wants to essentially turn himself into god, as he believes it to be a birthright), and a secondary antagonist in the entire Shinra corporation (a ruling force in control of the world due to its supply of it's electricity and it's strong military prescence - and of course they're killing the planet). Your party is full of colourful characters with individual story threads and side missions.
This port isn't without it's faults and at times comes across half-assed, with no widescreen option and music not playing at ceretain parts - and it's sad to see that in the years that the PS4 port has been out, Square Enix have failed to patch this issue - but I'm scoring this based on my love for the game.
