Inside that weird tower you have to collect 8-10 of those yellow shiny crystals and avoid the icicle spears. If those hit you, you get into a battle and I think being very likely an ambush. First strike on Tidus for flee or having someone else with First strike then switching Tidus will solve this.
First strike gets to move before ambush.

I didn't show the entire thing getting all of them because it's just the same thing over and over getting them.

After that, prepare for the boss fight and equip something if you got anything nice from the crystals.
