Recap: Deep within Giruvegan, the party passes through a crystalline passage filled with mist and what they speculate could be huge amounts of nethicite. The esper Shemhazai guards the out, and they defeat her and gain her power.

Beyond, Ashe finds herself all alone, communing with ghostly beings known as Occuria. They speak of the Sun-cryst, the original crystal from which Raithwall had cut his three nethicite shards. Ashe is granted the Treaty-blade, a counterpart to the Sword of Kings that can cut still-living nethicite out of the Sun-cryst, and asked to use it to destroy Venat. Venat is another Occurian, but they consider her a heretic and wish only to administer judgement on her and those she serves. Under the eyes of Rasler's visage, Ashe accepts the blade.

The other five couldn't see the Occuria, but were able to hear their words to Ashe. They urge her not to go through with the destruction of the empire. At this point, Balthier realizes Cid wasn't coming, and had manipulated Ashe into arriving here to be granted the sword. Remembering that Reddas had been investigating another route to Cid, they return to Balfonheim to speak with him.

Meanwhile at the palace in Archades, Larsa argues with Vayne and Cid about Ashe's intentions. Vayne tasks Gabranth with spying on Ashe to determine whether she seeks peace or war with the empire. As Gabranth departs, Venat reports to Cid that Ashe has received the Treaty-blade.

At Reddas's manse, the party finds him rapidly dispatching a rescue crew to a place called the Ridorana Cataract. A fleet he had sent was rendered unable to move due to thick mist, and in need to help. They relay the story of what happened at Giruvegan, and the story of the Occuria and Sun-cryst. Fran hypothesizes that the Sun-cryst is the source of all nethicite's power, and if cut by the Sword of Kings, the dusk shard would be rendered lifeless. Another option is to use the Treaty-blade on it, and use the new nethicite cut from it to fight the empire.

Reddas had seen mention of the location of the Sun-cryst in documents in Cid's office when he raided Draklor Laboratory, mentioning places called the Pharos Lighthouse and Ridorana Cataract in the Naldoan Sea. His fleet had been sent to investigate when it ran into trouble. Although the location is within the Jagd Naldoa, meaning the Strahl would be unable to fly there, Reddas also happens to have taken a skystone that can fly in jagd from the laboratory during his visit. Balthier gives the stone to Nono, who installs it in the newly-repaired Strahl. Reddas also chooses to come along, and joins the party for the journey into the sea.
