FINAL FANTASY XIV: ENDWALKER (#5 - Secret of the Final Days) - Sloth Plays
0The Warrior - treated as an unusual familiar sent by Azem - tags along with Hythlodaeus and Hades as they go about their business in Elpis, checking up on various experiments and concepts. We speakwith Venat, the previous Azem, and then Hades introduces their esteemed colleague, Hermes.
Hermes then explains the concept of dynamis - emotion energy that exists in the world along with aether. Using dynamis, he created a series of curious harpy sisters (a hivemind known as 'Meteion') who would be tasked with seeking out the meaning of life on other worlds, out in the dynamis-rich vacuum of space.
However, the Meteion sister living in Elpis became highly distressed at the answers her sisters sent back from other worlds, and fearing Hermes would be similarly upset, sought to hide away. From what little of her report came through to him, Hermes realized the others might try to intervene or take Meteion into custody, to avoid him discovering the bleak truths she had found.
In the end, the Warrior was forced to battle him, before Meteion then interrupted their conflict to give the rest of her report; All worlds the Meteions arrived at were dead or dying upon their arrival, leaving them with no answers or meaning to pass onto Hermes. Hearing this, Hermes decides to test humanity; everyone present except Venat and the Warrior have their memories wiped, and Hermes tells Meteion and her sisters to cultivate their despair at the edge of the universe - there they begin to sing the song which ends all life, carried throughout the universe on currents of dynamis, causing the Final Days.
After this, Venat promises the Warrior they will dedicate the years leading to their future preparing for the confrontation with Meteion, and seeking a means to avert the Final Days from happening again. She then goes on to become Hydaelyn, and waits for the birth of the Warrior on the Source.
The Warrior then makes a hasty return to the present, where the apocalypse has spread to Garlemald, compounding the troubles facing the fractured remnants of the Empire. We rejoin the Scions and stop the spread of further despair and death, but decide ultimately they must convene with Hydaelyn directly. Fortunately, the Sharlayans seem to have found a means of doing so...
