Finding Outpost 31: An Interview with Peter Abbott (The Thing 41st Anniversary, LHFF 2023)
9John Carpenter's THE THING was released in the United Kingdom 41 years ago today. Regarded as a pinnacle of science fiction-horror moviemaking as well as one of John Carpenter’s greatest films, the film has become a cult favourite and has developed legions of fans around the world.
Now, we all know about the joys of fandom, after all when we attended the Leeds Horror Film Festival 2023 this year, it was very much an event created by fans of horror films, for fans of horror films. However, how much of a fan are you? And how far are you willing to go in order to have the ultimate collection of memorabilia from your favourite film?
Well, allow me to introduce you to a gentleman called Peter Abbott. Peter came along to the Leeds Horror Film Festival as a special guest to share his journey and to give attendees of the festival a chance to browse (in awe, I might add!) at his huge collection on everything from John Carpenter's The Thing.
After first being introduced to the film at the tender age of nine, Peter's collection took off over the decades that followed, and at one point he even traveled to British Colombia/Alaska to visit the filming locations in 2016 ... where he also acquired some rather unique souvenirs!
Peter has now met John Carpenter on numerous occasions over the years, and has collected various signatures from various members of the cast and crew. He even appears in various bonus features/documentaries on Blu-Ray releases from Arrow Video and Turbine Media.
When I reached out to Peter to ask if he would be interested in taking part in an interview for the channel, he was more than happy to share his stories with us and discuss everything that is The Thing for this video.
So, special thanks go to Peter for taking the time to do the interview with me (especially as I was hovering around whilst he was putting out his collection on the tables!), as well as Pete Trigg and Dominic Brunt.
