Fire Emblem: Three Houses - FINALE: (Blue Lions) The End of an Era
It's sometimes both hard and easy to say goodbye to a game. Especially one you've sunk 300+ hours into.
But we all must move on into a brighter future.
Score:
Gameplay: 8.5/10
For Fire Emblem, I think this game does a fine job at expanding upon the already existing gameplay. There are some minor issues, like how enemies have the same new mechanics, but they use Gambit fairly well while not using Combat Artes often. I remember maybe 2 instances of enemies using them, Edelgard with her spamming attack and those archers using Deadeye in Azure Moon. I'll also throw in the teaching system here , it is a good way to experiment with learning skills outside of your class, such as teaching a sword user flying to get alert stance. It doesn't help with low stats though, but they did add in a little bit of RNG lenience with base class stats and through gardening.
Another note, the game lags really hard in the walking around areas, especially the more models there are on screen, like in the dining hall.
Story: 7.8/10
I'll rate this in parts, starting with Part 1, White Clouds.
You have to do WC four separate times, once for each route. The missions have no motivational ties against any house except for the Blue Lions for a couple of missions. The saving graces for WC would be Dimitri's descent in his route and following Edelgard's rise to power in her route.
Moving on to Verdant Wind, Claude is a true bro, the route covers a lot of the villain's lore and ends with you facing off against a foe that would fit well in another route as well. It is an overall good experience.
Now with Crimson Flower, it is the most unique route of the 4, being the only one against the Church, but it is clear the devs didn't care for this route as much as the others. It is good, but the shortest of all the routes.
Onto Silver Snow, which feels like the black sheep of the routes. It follows every mission from VW skipping one mission and has a stupid reason for a final boss. The argument was made that it gives more motivation to fight the enemy. Sure, but it doesn't make the copy-pasted story any better. What this route does do well though is give Rhea reasoning behind her motivations.
Lastly Azure Moon, which is the most unique of the routes. It handles its themes very well and ends in a classic Fire Emblem fashion. The main issue with this route is that the lore of TWSITD is hidden away, although it wraps itself up just fine beating a big boss.
I'll give an additional shoutout to the support conversations. They aren't all perfect, but there are more good than bad ones I say.
Sound: 9/10
The music is honestly just fantastic. The voice acting is fairly good, especially considering the amount of voiced dialogue by everyone, including unnamed NPCs. The main nitpick that I have falls into a UI problem with shopping being relatively annoying.
Graphics: 6.5/10
The models for characters, monsters, and such look good, but pretty much everywhere else is lacking. The environments where you walk around look pretty bad, especially that one big square room when you choose Edelgard in part 1. Support conversations have backgrounds that are literally low resolution JPEGs that loop around. Almost every combat art has the same animation besides a few exceptions. I don't know if it's because they were using the engine from the Warriors franchise, but hopefully the next game will fix it up in the graphics department.
Other Stuff:
The game does have replay value with the different routes and Maddening difficulty. Also, there's all the Byleth S supports if you're into that kind of thing.
Overall: 8/10
It's one of the better, more content rich entries into the series, and worth a buy for someone who likes the series or is interested in getting into it.
And now for something completely different.
