1Fire Pro Gaiden Blazing Tornado is a professional wrestling video game developed and published by Spike for the Sega Saturn in 1996. Review:
This is a great wrestling game and probably the best of it’s time. The WWF/WWE games of the era were always hit and miss but this is a solid arcade wrestler with large sprites and excellent graphics.
The problem with this game is that it is unclear how you are actually supposed to pull off the grappling moves.
On easy, it’s not much of a problem until later on because just bashing the grapple button works but once opponents get a bit harder, bashing the buttons will fail every time leaving you clueless on how to do it.
The trick is, when you get into a clench, don’t press any buttons until the computer starts his move. By this point you will be too late and the computer will throw you but what you must do is, time in your head, how long it takes for the computer to throw you after you get into a clench. The way you win is to press the throw button and a direction a couple of frames BEFORE the computer goes to throw you. If you go too early or too late, the computer will win the clench. It’s a very tough system to get used to but once you get used to the timing, it’s doable.
Until you get to normal mode. Once I worked out easy mode (this playthrough), I tried normal mode because I thought I had the hang of it. And I was right. I did have the hang of it and I breezed through the game.
Then a new final boss appeared (not present in easy mode). He was insane. I couldn’t win any of the grapples. He destroyed me every time and I lost all of my continues on him. A game like this shouldn’t have continues on it, but if they had to, they shouldn’t have put in an almost impossible to beat last boss. Fighting games should have one or the other, never both.
So, this ruined it for me a bit. Also, it seemed that winning the grapples was the only chance you get to beat the computer so you are forced to play in a very cheesy way and not try to veer off the winning formula by experimenting. Shame because I enjoyed the rest of the game.
