The centenary of the first recorded British medical flight has been remembered with a re-enactment. 100 years ago, in the desert in Sinai during the First World War, the first ever aeromedical evacuation took place. The medical officer of an injured soldier from the Imperial Corps persuaded a pilot to take him to hospital in an aircraft, cutting his journey time from two days (by train and camel) to 45 minutes. Since then carrying injured personnel by air has saved countless lives and medical personnel from the Royal Air Force have provided care in every major conflict. HRH the Duke of Gloucestershire marked the anniversary with the opening of a new museum at the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Chelmsford.
