Kirby: Planet Robobot is a 2016 sidescrolling platformer. Released to broad critical praise, it faces Kirby with an industrial, science fiction aesthetic previously only used sparingly throughout the series. There is an unusually dark storyline involving planetary exploitation, an evil corporation, an ancient AI, and even some vague family drama, yet it maintains Kirby’s general cheeriness and sense of adventure with high quality level design and great music. It also contains unusually many links and callbacks to previous installments of the Kirby series, welding together seemingly disparate and forgotten story elements that I didn’t previously consider part of a story at all.
In this video, I play through Kirby 3D Rumble and the first two stages of Patched Plains.
