For all the buildup and potential drama, it’s pretty underwhelming. The boss fight isn't much to write about, and the ending is kind of a cop-out.

Overall, there’s still more good than bad in this video game, though.

The excellent clay aesthetic, Elline’s charming relationship with Waddle Dee and Kirby, the great music, and the cute and strangely sad story combine to create something very enjoyable. All this compensates, in my view, the game’s lack of difficulty and disappointing boss battles. Despite the art theme and gameplay similarities, this doesn’t really feel like a proper follow-up to Kirby: Canvas Curse, unless the point is to contrast the former’s loneliness with this one’s central theme of friendship.

I also like how this is one of those rare pop cultural creations in which a heavyset woman is still portrayed as cute.
