A paralyzed person in the USA tweeted through a chip implanted in his brain. The tweet, posted by Philip O-Keefe, a 62-year-old Australian patient with ALS, went down in history as a 'direct thought tweet' in the world.
In the US, a company that puts neural computer interfaces in the human brain has allowed a person with mobility restriction due to a nervous system disease to tweet using the power of thought.
The tweet, posted by Philip O-Keefe, a 62-year-old Australian with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), went down in history as a “direct thought tweet”.
In the first case in the world, Philip O'Keefe shared a post on the Twitter account of Thomas Oxley, CEO of Synchron company, which developed the technology, saying "I just created this tweet by thinking", while the tweet was sent wirelessly through the chip in O'Keefe's brain.
A computer interface called 'Stentrode' was installed in O'Keefe's brain last year, which was unable to move due to advanced paralysis caused by ALS, and an implant designed to enable patients to wirelessly control digital devices through thought was placed through his carotid artery.
'I CANNOT THINK WHERE I WANT TO CLICK ON THE COMPUTER'
The first tweet read, “No keystrokes or sounds needed. I just created this tweet by thinking”, while O'Keefe later tweeted 7 more with the power of thought in response to the questions asked.
Commenting on the subject, Synchron said, “When I first heard about this technology, I knew how much independence it could give me. Now I just have to think about where I want to click on the computer and I can send e-mails, bank, shop and send messages to the world via Twitter,” he said.
Synchron said the first non-human study of the brain-computer interface will be performed in the US next year.
ELON MUSK TO START TRIALS IN 2022
While Synchron stands out as one of the few neurotechnology startups that have made great strides in BCI technologies, Neuralink, the company of the world's richest person, Elon Musk, also plans to start human trials in 2022.
The billionaire entrepreneur had previously claimed that future Neuralink devices could do everything from restoring whole-body functionality to streaming music directly to the brain.
Musk said that the ultimate goal of the technology is to allow humans to compete with advanced artificial intelligence. nonstop news
