Legends of Runeterra (abbreviated LoR) is a free-to-play online digital collectible card game developed and published by Riot Games. Legends of Runeterra will exist in the same universe as Riot Games multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends. It is scheduled to be released for Microsoft Windows, iOS and Android.

The game is played 1 versus 1 and each player begins the match with a hand of 4 playing cards randomly selected from their card deck, 20 Health Points (abbreviated HP) on their nexus, and 0 mana. Before the match begins, each player also has the option to trade out any of the first 4 cards they drew for random different ones from their deck. After this pre-game phase concludes, both players receive 1 mana gem and only one player receives the attack token, while the other receives the defense token. Only the player with the attack token may attack during this round and after each round the tokens switch between players and each player draws 1 random card from their deck. Also, as the rounds increase, the number of mana gems each player receives increases based on the round number, so if it is round 5 each player receives 5 mana gems up to a maximum of 10. At the end of each round any unused mana becomes spell mana, up to a maximum of 3, and this mana can only be used to cast spell cards. Mana gems are the currency in this game. In order to play cards you must spend a certain amount of mana gems. There are 3 types of cards in this game, Champions, Followers, and spells. Champions are the most powerful cards in the game and each have a criterion that once met level up the card into a more powerful version. Followers consist of all other normal playable cards and spells are powerful cards that cause effects when played. Playing a card means putting it on the field instead of in your hand. Once on the field you may place them forward once more to either attack or defend with them. When attacking, if no opposing card blocks, your card will hit the nexus of the enemy player dealing damage equal to its power stat. If it is defended against, the cards will clash dealing their respective damage amounts to one another. Each card also has a defense stat. If the damage received is greater than or equal to the defense stat of the card, it is killed from the game. Striking an enemy nexus with a card deals no damage to that card. The objective of the game is to outwit your opponent and effectively bring their nexus to 0 HP before they can do the same to yours.
