First Play - Of Orcs and Men (2012)

I want to like this game. I loved Styx: Shards of Darkness, so I was intent on liking this game. But the fact is this is a very different game from Shards of Darkness. In this, the first Styx game but the third in the continuity, Styx and his orc acquaintance Arkail wade through seas of human enemies in gameplay that is 0% open world 100% follow-the-trail (less Elder Scrolls/Shards of Darkness, more Mass Effect/Fable), 1% stealth 99% action beat-em-up. Oh, and with looooooong cut scenes that add little to the experience. In the end, I'll give it 2.5 stars, 3 at the most, not because the game itself is worth it, but because the setting is worth it. You play characters who are traditionally bad guys, fighting characters who are traditionally good guys, in strings of quasi-turn based encounter. Not truly turn based because the action doesn't pause when you stack up moves in the action queue, it only slows way down. If you liked Styx: Shards of Darkness because of the setting, this *might* be for you, but you will also be frustrated with the change in his character and abilities. If you liked the gameplay of Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Dragon Age, this will feel familiar.
