First Play - X-COM: UFO Defense (1994)

Okay, not exactly a First Play, because I played it 28 years ago. So I remember the controls, mostly, and I remember what to expect, mostly. But I still wanted to play it again for the first (ish) time. It's just like I remember. Very clean game design, the choices are obvious, the controls function exactly how you want them to, and the progression is excellent. You play an elite (but strangely subject to berserking, or breaking and running, or freezing up) bunch of international soldiers tasked with stopping an alien invasion. It's a soft invasion, with accelerating alien presence, but without an actual landing force attempting to take control of the world. There is a world view in which you control bases and intercept UFOs; a base view in which you manage soldier training, engineering projects, scientific research of recovered artifacts, and supply; and a tactical view, when you land and assault a UFO with your troops. There is an enormous variety of gear for your troops, around a dozen different alien races each with several ranks and specialties, and about the same number of types of UFOs. There are also alien base raids, and aliens raiding your base, so be prepared!
