First Thoughts: Super Mario 3D World + Bowsette's Fury
i was only playing single player here, as you can see! but i tried the multiplayer off camera as well, so i can talk about that also
when playing 3d world's local multiplayer it's pretty good, you can't use the snapshot mode for some reason and you can't control the camera at all, but camera control isn't super important to the game in the first place. it is pretty easy to lose one player or another off the edge of the screen though
overall, much like the new super mario bros. games, i'd call multiplayer 3d world more of a chaotic nonsense experience than a refined and precise platforming challenge for several participants. it's lots of silly fun if you're looking for chaotic nonsense and don't mind making very little progress while losing a lot of lives
why does this game even still HAVE lives anyway? nintendo released super mario odyssey over three years ago, right? i didn't dream that?
i didn't get a chance to try it myself, but online play is reportedly absolute garbage. the netcode basically tries to keep the systems in sync by stopping the game entirely if someone falls behind, waiting for them to catch up. which is just an utterly atrocious way to synchronise a platformer of all things. so, uh, don't buy this for online play purposes. it's bad. also tbh even if it worked perfectly, it'd still be silly chaotic nonsense, and that sort of experience definitely works best when you're sharing a couch with the other players, so..... yeah
bowsette's fury in two player is pretty much the same as odyssey in two player, i guess? player two controls bowser jr., who can fly and so doesn't do a whole lot of platforming. much like in odyssey, unless you're controlling both players yourself for exploit reasons (beach volleyball lol), it's probably a good idea to have your more experienced player controlling the "assistant" character. then you can help out a little here and there, nudging the newer player toward success, while still allowing them to get the primary experience the game intended
i think it's a bit worse to play than odyssey's two-player mode tbh, because you actually have to manage bowser jr.'s height and he's basically impossible to control. controlling cappy as player two was a lot more precise. on the bright side, though, you don't take away any of mario's moveset by entering two-player mode? that's a weakness of odyssey's two-player, mario can't do any cap throws or bounces on his own if someone else is controlling cappy
