New World is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game by Amazon Game Studios set to be released in early 2021 The game was previously scheduled to launch in August 2020 after being delayed from its May 2020 release date. Set in the mid-1600s, players colonize a fictional land modeled after British America in the Atlantic Ocean. Players can scavenge resources, craft items, and fight other players. The game will be using a buy-to-play model, meaning there will be no monthly mandatory subscription fee.
New World feels somewhat anomalous. It's a new MMO, but not a wildly ambitious Kickstarter project, not a survival game, not free-to-play, and it does not take place in space. It feels like a game that could've released alongside Guild Wars 2 in 2012—but it's brand new and it's releasing here in 2020. It's also Amazon's first big PC game release, so expectations are high.
