Fitzgerald Park home to Cork Public Museum, it is just a short stroll along the on the Mardyke from Cork City centre and the University College Cork. Fitzgerald's Park where the visitor and local alike can enjoy a riverside picnic on the banks of the river Lee.

Fitzgerald's Park named after a previous Lord Mayor of Cork in 1901, Edward Fitzgerald, offers a quite retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, with its beautiful tree lined avenues, brimming flower beds and rose garden to its many statues and sculptures and the large central fountain, this 18 acre park is a wonderful treat

Fitzgerald's Park
There are many sculptures in Fitzgerald's Park one of the sculptures is of Michael Collins by Seamus Murphy. Fitzgerald's Park is a quiet haven, which has a playground for the children and a cafe to enjoy the view of the river Lee and across to the gardens and houses of the Sunday's Well area.

Fitzgerald's Park
Just a short walk across the road on one side is University College Cork (UCC) and across the river on Daly's Bridge (The Shakey Bridge) on Sunday's Well area you will find the old Cork City Gaol. Just above Fitzgerald's Park is the area around the Mardyke and here you will see the new Mardyke bridge and this lovely riverside walk

Fitzgerald's Park
If you walk a little further, continue through the park and exit by the Shakey bridge heading west in the direction of the Carrighrohane road, you will see the Cork County Hall on your left.
You can't miss it as it is Irelands 2nd largest building.
Back into the riverside walk again and along an area called the Lee fields, with views of the River Lee, the water rushing on the Weir, this section of the River Lee is popular with canoeists, and sometimes keen fishermen. You can enjoy views across the water to the imposing Atkins Hall apartments built back in the 1800's and also the Lifetime Lab building, the red stone building with the large single tower/chimney which incorporated the Old Waterworks site at one stage on the Lee Road, some of the buildings there dated back to the 1700's.

Sky Garden
Fitzgerald's Park Sky Garden
Dermot Gavin’s Sky Garden won a gold medal at prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in 2011. It was then transported to Cork City and is currently on display in Fitzgerald Park. It originally included a sky pod centrepiece hanging from a crane some 30 metres above the ground. But in it's new home it will remain on the ground.

Fitzgerald's Park Sky Fountain
The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world.[7][8]

Originally a monastic settlement, Cork was expanded by Viking invaders around 915. Its charter was granted by Prince John in 1185. Cork city was once fully walled, and the remnants of the old medieval town centre can be found around South and North Main streets. The third largest city by population on the island of Ireland, the city's cognomen of "the rebel city" originates in its support for the Yorkist cause in the Wars of the Roses.[9] Corkonians sometimes refer to the city as "the real capital",[10] a reference to its opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty in the Irish Civil War.

Sofía Vergara at Fitzgerald's Park

Well, we always knew Jackie Lennox's chipper was world famous but now we have definitive proof.

Hollywood couple Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara have been spotted Cork city today and they have shared pictures on social media of them enjoying their lunch.

But while seeing photos of the two on Leeside was surprising enough, the images of them eating a back of Lennox's chips next to a fountain at Fitzgerald's Park almost have to be seen a couple of times to be believed.

Vergara is well known for her playing Gloria in the hit television show Modern Family while Manganiello is also known for his role as Flash Thompson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and werewolf Alcide Herveaux in five seasons of the HBO series True Blood.

The couple are on holiday in Ireland with their dog bubbles, who also appeared to be enjoying his day on Leeside, and they have also been spotted in Galway in Dublin in recent days. But now they are in Cork and we eagerly await to see where they visit next.

What do you think they should do next? Watch a GAA game down the Pairc? Pint of Beamish in Coughlan's? Hopefully, they might stick around long enough to see the Jazz.

Either way, they've certainly ticked one box of things to do in Cork by eating Lennox's in Fitzgerald's Park.
