Firstly, I used the standard way to get to the island. To see a faster way check the link at the bottom. Now as far as actually getting the 8 red coins. If you miss one then simply jump onto the edge of the river and walk back to the beginning. There you can take another leaf and give it another go without deliberately killing yourself. Also try to get the 1-UP.
It's much harder (though possible) to get every coin without using the lily pad so I don't recommend taking that path to get the Shine Sprite.
