Fly Punch Boom immediately brings party brawler games like Super Smash Bros. to mind. The game's main combat mechanics are immediately accessible due to their intuitive nature and can be enjoyed on multiple levels of play. You can play it casually, just for fun with friends, or competitively. The game's mechanics can be mastered on a whole new level for competitive play. This is also very similar to Super Smash Bros. where the competitive crowd discovered and took advantage of more advanced techniques such as wave dashing.

The game also features a colorful and zany cast characters, each with their own special abilities. The levels have their own personality as well, each with a different theme and deadly environmental death traps.

The core combat mechanic is like a high speed game of Rochambeau. Each player will have to fly across the map and gather speed. Once you have enough speed, you can collide with your opponent, where you can pick one of three attacks, hit, throw, and counter. Each attack is countered by one attack. For example, hit counters throws, throws bypass counters, and counters block hits. If playing the game on a higher level, you can even do things such as pick hit against your opponent's counter, and then miss the skill check on purpose to fail your attack, thus avoiding the counter attack.

The game is fair in that almost every interaction has quick time events or skill checks that let you escape your opponent's attacks as well as dodge environmental traps if you are fast enough.

In addition to the regular combat mechanics, the game throws in more mayhem by letting you ram into objects on the map to fling large and comical items at your opponents, such as giant whales. You can also activate traps on the map as well. Once you are damaged enough and are flung into the environment, some areas on the map will trigger environmental traps. A skill check will pop up and if you miss it, it will result in immediate, and comical, death.

The game controls very well and the combat feels very responsive. The game offers local co-op of up to two players versus two as well as online play. The game seems to have a large enough pool of players online, but I did get absolutely destroyed in almost every match; these guys are crazy good.

Fly Punch Boom! is a pretty fun and well constructed party brawler and it brought to mind some very fond memories of playing Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 with my family and friends.
