This game was released in the U.S. over two years later from its Japanese counterpart, so it might seem pretty crude for an NES game approaching the 90s, but it's actually a pretty good, old-school action game for the NES, and a platformer/fighting game hybrid. Coming from Culture Brain, one of the more underrated developers of the eighties and early nineties, this game's innovations should come as no surprise. I believe that this is also the very first game in the "Hiryu no Ken" series and one of the few to be released outside of Japan, not to mention NES fighting games are rare (the genre is limited on the NES/FC, not that this game is rare).

Playing as the main protagonist of the series, Ryuhi, you travel around the world to become the strongest and to take down thugs and evildoers. You progress by defeating enemies until a boss foe appears, then you beat them to get power-ups needed to accomplish more things during looping side-scrolling segments. You also have one-on-one fighting segments that handle surprisingly well and you can even execute counter moves and special attacks. That not only makes the game a competent sidescroller, but one of the first "complex" NES versus fighters. Enjoy.
