The Folklore Guild
Lay a Garland (1840)
Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856)
Guest conducted by Ruben Valenzuela of Bach Collegium San Diego
http://bachcollegiumsd.org/

Text by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher from the play The Maid's Tragedy (pub. 1619). Pearsall's adaptation of the text reflects the 3rd person, instead of the original 1st.

Lay a garland on her hearse
of dismal yew.
Maidens, willow branches wear,
say she died true.
Her love was false, but she was firm
Upon her buried body lie
lightly, thou[II] gentle earth.

Recorded and filmed at Saint Martin of Tours Parish in La Mesa, Ca.
Original still photos taken in Bellinzona (Switzerland), Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and the Bennington Memorial Oak Grove in San Diego, California.

Photo of Pearsall, public domain sheet music, and the Bristol Choral Society are not the original property of Folklore but are intended for education use.
