Formation Z (MSX port)

This is the MSX port of the classic arcade game Formation Z. Published by Jaleco and Nippon Dexter and ported by Hect in 1985.
The trend of shape-shifting robots in the anime and toy sectors during the early 1980s was fueled by the triumph of TV anime shows like “Macross” (1982-1983). This game is a key contributor that extended this wave into the gaming sector.
The game is a horizontal-scrolling shooter. The player’s vessel, known as the Expel, is a metamorphic fighter that can alternate between a robot and flight form. Expel is controlled by the player using a joystick that moves in four directions and two buttons (jump/transform and pulse laser/Big Bang).
In its flight form, Expel can soar at great velocities, but it also depletes energy rapidly. If the energy level drops to zero, Expel will descend to the ground. Energy can be restored by making contact with energy cores found on the ground.
Expel has a pair of offensive moves: a quick-firing pulse laser and a potent Big Bang that can be unleashed by pressing and holding the attack button (charge shot). Certain adversaries, like tanks and bosses, can only be defeated with the Big Bang, making it crucial to use both attacks strategically.
The fundamental gameplay cycle involves gathering energy during the ground stages and then utilizing it during the sea stages. The player needs to ensure they have sufficient energy to traverse the sea, as running out of energy mid-way will cause the Expel to crash.
