In regards to the word "Eskimo":
I looked into it. It may either be derived from a term meaning "Snowshoe-netter" or another term meaning "Eater of raw meat," which is the meaning I half-remembered. In Canada the only people who would be referred to as such are Inuit, but in Alaska there are two other groups that are NOT Inuit, and the only existing umbrella term is "Eskimo."
