Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. This is a program to help keep our community connected to books during the pandemic when we are unable to meet in person.

For November 19’s “Honoring Hanukkah” program, Coté will read aloud from Elie Wiesel’s short story “Lighting Candles in Death’s Kingdom” and other stories. Summary: Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was a noted Holocaust survivor, award winning novelist, journalist, human rights activist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. In 1993, Wiesel spoke at the dedication of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. His words, which echo his life’s work, are carved in stone at the entrance to the museum: “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” The story “Lighting Hanukkah Candles in Death’s Kingdom” was first written from harrowing memories and published in Yiddish on December 12, the first day of Hanukkah in 1969.
